The definition of ISO files and how to burn, extract and create ISO file
There are different file types present to contain the data or contents for various purposes. For example, an APK file is used in the Android operating system to contain all the data and contents of the application that is required to install an application. Similarly, the IPA file type is used in the iOS operating system. People are familiar with the APK and IPA file types. Unfortunately, most people do not know so much about the ISO file type, though the ISO file is used for various purposes and people use them regularly mainly on the computer. In this article, we will learn about what the ISO file is and how to burn, extract, and create an ISO file.

ToggleWhat is an ISO file?
An ISO file is also known as the ISO image, an exact copy of an optical disc such as CD, DVD, or Blu-ray ARCHIVED into a single file. An ISO file is often called an archive file as an ISO file contains all the data in archive format that can be found on an optical disc. The ISO file is often used to back up the content of the entire optical disc.
You can consider the ISO file as a box where all the parts are available that are necessary to build a toy. The name ISO was taken from the file system used by optical media ISO 9660. The main purpose of an ISO file or ISO image is that you can archive an exact copy of a disc and later use the file to burn a new disc that contains the exact copy of the original. ISO image files can be mounted in all operating systems and consider the file as a virtual disc; all the operating systems’ apps will treat the image file as a real optical disc.
The use cases of ISO file
ISO files are used to distribute large programs over the internet because all the files of programs can be contained as a single file.
For example, many antivirus programs are distributed as ISO images. The Ophcrack password recovery tool contains the entire operating system and the other required software as an ISO file. Every required file for that program is wrapped in the ISO file.
The single ISO image contains all of the files needed for any tool to operate. As previously mentioned, this makes not just the tool’s download but also, burning on a disc or other medium.
Operating systems like Windows 8, 10, 11 and various Linux distributions can be downloaded in the form of an ISO file.
How to burn ISO file
The best way to use an ISO file is to burn the ISO file to a CD, or DVD. Windows, 11, 10, and 8 can burn the ISO file without any 3rd party tools. For some programs, burning an ISO file is not just an option, it’s mandatory. To illustrate, some programs such as hard drive diagnosis tools are only usable outside the operating system. That means it is mandatory to burn the ISO file to some form of removable media so that the computer can boot from it.
On the other hand, some programs are not developed to boot from. For instance, Microsoft Office is often distributed as an ISO image and designed to be burned but there is no need to boot from it as MS Office does not need to be run from outside of Windows.
For Windows 8/8.1/10/11
- First, download the ISO CD image to a folder on the computer.
- Open the folder> Right Click on the .iso file
- From the Menu Bar> Click on Burn disc image> The window disc burn will open
- Select the Disc burner
- Click “Burn”
How to extract ISO file
ISO files can be extracted if anyone does not want to burn the ISO file to a disc or USB storage. There are several unzipper apps present to unzip the ISO image such as 7-zip. By extracting the ISO file, you will be able to see all the contents of the ISO file and browse the file like any folder on the computer.
You can convert the archive file format of the ISO file. Tools like Filestar will allow you to convert the archive file to 7Z, ZIP, TAR, JAR, RAR, etc.
How to create ISO files
The ISO file is a great solution if you want to make a digital backup of any physical disc. The copy stored in the ISO file can be easily accessed to perform various tasks such as installing software, games, and others on the computer.
In the MacOS and Linux operating systems, the tools are installed to create an ISO file. But for the Windows operating system, you must take the help of 3rd party apps. There are many apps present on the internet to create an ISO file. Though you are not able to create an ISO file in the Windows operating system without any 3rd party software, you can burn, mount, or copy the ISO file in the Windows operating system without any 3rd party software.
How to mount an ISO file
Mounting an ISO file means to trick your computer into thinking that the ISO file is a real disc. This way you can use the ISO file just like a real optical disc.
Suppose, you are playing a game that requires the original disc to be inserted. But instead of inserting the original disc, you can create an ISO file of that disc and just mount the ISO file and the system will think of the ISO file as an original disc. Windows 10 and Windows 11 both let you mount an ISO image without any third-party software. Just select the image in File Explorer, and then head to Manage > Mount.
Conclusion
An ISO file is an archive file that contains an identical copy of data found on an optical disc, like a CD or DVD, and is often used for backing up optical discs or for distributing large programs.
